Stopping The Intergenerational Addiction Cycle is Paramount

Families at the center benefit from six distinct service components that together address the complex issues affecting them. An immediate priority is to stabilize the children while their mothers undergo treatment for their addiction and mental health issues. The ultimate goal is to prepare the whole family for successful community reentry as productive participants in the community. Specifically, our STOP THE CYCLE program services include:

Residential Program

We provide a warm and caring environment for women and their children to recover from the ill effects that occur from addiction. A mother who is struggling with addiction arrives at our door impaired in her ability to take adequate care of herself and her children due to the overwhelming stress from the consequences of her disease (homelessness, poverty, involvement with the criminal justice system, etc). Women and their children may remain in the residential component for a maximum of 18 months.

Services include:

  • 24 hour supervision and support
  • Transportation services
  • 12 step meetings
  • Spiritual groups
  • Exercise classes
  • Family bonding activities

Treatment Services

Stopping the intergenerational disease of addiction is paramount. Families served by the Center benefit from a comprehensive approach that address the complex issues affecting these families. The vast majority of these women experienced childhood sexual abuse and/or domestic violence.

An immediate priority is to stabilize the needs of the children while their mothers undergo treatment and support. The ultimate goal is to prepare the whole family for successful reentry in the community as productive citizens. All women and children residing in our residential program receive comprehensive assessment & treatment services while in residence and for a maximum of three years after leaving the residential component.

These services include:

  • Individual, family and group counseling for the women and children
  • Psychiatric evaluation and medication services when indicated
  • Substance addiction educational groups & relapse prevention groups
  • Individualized case management services to hook residents to supplemental and health services available to them in the community
  • Trauma and other women focused groups to address the issues that the women face after years of abuse and degradation.
  • Case management services
  • Art Therapy

Employment Services

It is critical that the SBA Center’s residents be coached and readied to re-enter the workforce as productive and proactive contributors to their own future success. Having gainful employment assists these families to live substance free in our community.

Vocational Training Employment Services include:

  • Pre-employment training classes that teach basic vocations skills including job search skills, computer job searching skills, interviewing techniques, and resume preparation. GED classes.
  • Educational programs including GED classes.
  • Referrals to community partners such as Vocational Rehabilitation and WorkForce One that provide funding for our residents to go back to school or attend vocational educational programs.

Child Developmental Program

Parental substance abuse often precipitates negative consequences for dependent children. Health and behavioral/school problems increase, as does criminal involvement and propensity for a substance addiction problem of their own. Additionally, many of the children enter our program with either developmental deficits or on the borderline for their age group. The STOP THE CYCLE program focuses on helping families in crisis restore the family to health and independence, giving both the women and their children the best chance to succeed in life. To that end, we provide the following services to increase the bond between mother and child while helping these children to catch up or exceed their developmental milestones:

  • An in-depth assessment is provided for each child that enters the program.
  • SBA staff creates an individualized intervention program to create a pathway for healthy bonding between mother and child and improvement in developmental milestones.
  • A developmental intervention specialist works individually and in groups with the mothers to improve the children’s developmental milestones.
  • Mothers are also taught parenting skills that will help them parent their children successfully to adulthood.

Case Management Services

Both the women and the children are provided linkages to benefits, health care, and other services needed for their successful reintegration into the community.

Life After the Susan B Anthony Recovery Center – Continuing Care Program

We work diligently with the women and children to prepare them for life after SBA, but recognize that the life-line we attached to these at-risk families must be maintained as they transition to independent living. Women and their children may participate in aftercare services for up to three years after leaving the residential program. SBA “Aftercare Services” includes individualized case management, regular visits to their new residences; relapse prevention groups and planned family activities.

Our Results Have Been Outstanding

The Center’s capacity to provide quality services and undertake this proposed program, is best reflected in its ‘success rate’ – the number of families who complete our program, remain substance-free and become productive members of our community.  Since our inception, over 674 families have been served by the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center.  The success rates for the families we served last fiscal year continue to be among the best in the nation.

In FY 2007-08 our agency served 161 families (55 families remained in the program at the end of the fiscal year).  Of the clients that completed 90 days or more (73 families) 75% graduated successfully (55 families).  Our success graduation rate is far beyond the 17 – 32% completion rate for women entering 6 to 12 month treatment programs nationally (National Evaluation Data and Technical Assistance Center).  Of the women who successfully completed our residential program, 87% improved their mental health functioning, 96% improved family functioning, 95% improved their ability to bond with their child and 81% of the clients that successfully completed the program are currently employed or enrolled in an educational/vocational program.  Of the children receiving developmental intervention services 100% of them increased their developmental levels.
